WUFIPA Mourns Victims of Lagos Fire Outbreaks; Demands Compensation and Bribery Investigation

LAGOS_The Worldwide United Forum for Igbo Patriots and Aborigines (WUFIPA) expresses its deepest condolences to the victims of the recent devastating fire incidents at the Great Nigerian Insurance Building on Lagos Island and the Nigerian Army Shopping complex (Arena) in Bolade, Oshodi.

The fire at the Great Nigerian Insurance Building and Nigerian Army Shopping Complex has resulted in the tragic loss of lives and the destruction of goods and properties valued at several billions of Naira. These losses primarily affect Igbo businessmen and women who are the backbone of the Lagos commercial sector.

Economic Hardship and Financial Burden

WUFIPA notes with grave concern that many of the affected traders operate on capital sourced from banks and financial institutions. With their livelihood destroyed, servicing these loans has become a herculean task, threatening the economic survival of thousands of families.

Allegations of Professional Misconduct

Of particular concern are reports circulating that officials of the Lagos State Fire Service allegedly demanded #35 million before attempting to extinguish the inferno. WUFIPA views these allegations as a shocking betrayal of public trust and an affront to the lives and properties the service is sworn to protect.

WUFIPA’s Demands

In the light of these tragedies, WUFIPA officially calls on the Lagos State Government to immediately put machinery in motion to provide financial relief and compensation to those who lost their livelihood in both the Lagos Island and Oshodi fire incidents. Two, to conduct a transparent inquiry into the allegations of bribery against the officials of Lagos State Fire Service to ensure accountability.

Thirdly, to recognize that Igbo businesses contribute a significant portion of Lagos State’s revenue.

The Lagos State government’s response to these crisis will serve as a clear indicator of it’s commitment to the safety and inclusion of the Igbo community in Lagos State. The WUFIPA Organization expect a response from Lagos State government that reflects the gravity of the losses and the value of the lives affected.
